Leadership
"Leadership is the ability to establish and manage a creative climate where people are self motivated toward the successful achievement of long term constructive goals in an environment of mutual respect in accord with our personal values." Mike Vance
That is the best definition of leadership that I have found in some notes that I took during a session with Mike Vance, author, lecturer and the former Dean of the Walt Disney Graduate School.
Max DePree, the former chairman of Herman Miller in his book Leadership Jazz tells us that he is a inveterate list maker and that his list of leadership attributes follows.
Strong criteria for us to live up to. My Dad, the baker, told me that "Leaders have to be servants to everyone and to be true to themselves." I am still trying to live up to that one.

- Awareness of the human spirit - personal skills
- Courage in relationships - facing tough decisions
- Sense of humor - a necessity in the chaos of change

- Respect for the future, regard for the present and an understanding of the past

- Breadth - room for contributions from all quarters
- Comfort with ambiguity - leaders must be able to live with the ambiguity of the complex creative team
- Presence - the ability to stop and ask questions and to have patience
